data retrieval?
My laptop stopped working last night, and I took it back to Best Buy, where I purchased it. I have the service plan, so it will be repaired for no charge BUT they told me that its extra for data retrieval. Anywhere from 0 to upwards of 0 depending on what "level’ of work it involved to get the data. Am I getting ripped off or is that really the going rate to have a service like that done? Thanks.
Yeah, data retrieval does cost that much. They may be charging a little bit more so they could earn sme profits but I think it’ll be wiser for you to buy a new laptop.
It depends on what kind of hardware is damaged. If it’s the hard drive, then it will certainly be difficult to retrieve the data. If it’s any other component then all they need is to put the hard drive into another computer and save it to dvd’s or an external drive.
When you say your laptop stopped working, what’s the extension of the damage? Does it turn on and freezes? Do you see any error message or bios screen loading?
Or does it simply won’t turn on?
If it’s a software problem, you can access the data with a Live CD. It’s an Operating System than can run on your cd-rom drive without installing anything on your computer. Knoppix is a very good one, for example.
